MUSSELS
The smart protein
A traditional classic, naturally sustainable
The question practically asks itself: why mussels, of all things? Yes, we mean the very ones from a classic Italian peppered mussel feast. The answer is simple: they're an extraordinary protein source that does it all by itself. They use no land, need no fresh water, feed or antibiotics, and grow by filtering seawater without weighing on the planet. Combining sustainability and tradition has never been this easy. And yet we eat very few of them, and that's where we come in!
At Small Giants, we turn these sustainable proteins into innovative products that are easy to bring to the table every day. So you can add more variety to your diet with tasty, convenient proteins in your routine!
Ready in one pop!
Going to the fish counter means cleaning mussels one by one, scraping the shells, cooking them and then shelling them, and still risking a mouthful of sand. Our version skips the prep entirely: they're already cleaned, steamed and immersed in a Galician tomato sauce. Just open the tin, grab some good bread and mop up the sauce, Italian-style.
Nothing heavy about it
The heavy feeling often associated with mussels comes from rich sauces or frying. On their own, they're a naturally lean and tender shellfish. Plus, our mussels are steamed, so they keep their nutrients intact without being hard to digest or causing the bloating typical of other protein sources.
A surprising nutritional profile
Mussels are a lean and exceptionally well-balanced protein source. They provide 15% complete protein rich in branched-chain amino acids for your muscles, with very little saturated fat. The real surprise? Weight for weight, they contain about 5 times the omega-3 of regular canned tuna, delivering an outstanding supply of essential fats that are key to heart and cell health.
A natural boost of vitamins and minerals
Beyond protein, mussels are a goldmine of essential micronutrients. They boast higher levels of vitamin B12 and heme iron than many red meats: instant energy against tiredness, with iron absorbed up to 3 times faster than plant-based iron. On top of that there's iodine, which stimulates metabolism and the thyroid, and zinc, key to strengthening the immune system.
Out at sea in the waters of Galicia
Our mussels come from the Rías of Galicia (Spain), deep natural inlets where the Atlantic Ocean meets the rivers, creating an ecosystem incredibly rich in nutrients. Farmed on ropes suspended in sheltered waters, they grow without any need for feed, antibiotics, land use or fresh water. They're harvested in season and processed fresh: steamed right by the coast, they go from sea to can in just over two hours, guaranteeing unbeatable freshness and the utmost respect for marine biodiversity.
Minimal environmental impact
Mussels are among the most eco-friendly proteins in the world. Compared to meat, they have a carbon footprint up to 20 times lower, since growing them requires no land, fresh water or feed. What's more, they're true natural filters: a single mussel cleans up to 50 litres of water a day*, absorbing CO₂ and nitrogen and actively contributing to ocean health.
* Our mussels come from highly monitored and classified open-sea areas. Every batch is tested to ensure full compliance with EU limits on heavy metals and micropollutants.
